The DEFA engine heater is designed to make the engine easy to start, and to markedly reduce emissions and harmful exhaust gases through preheating. A warm-engine start also means greater fuel efficiency, as petrol consumption is lower. Tests carried out by organisations such as Teknologisk Institutt(TI) in Oslo, VTT in Finland and Svenska Bilprovning, show that petrol consumption is reduced by between 0.1 and 0.5 ltr/cold start. Depending on the number of cold starts, every car driver could reduce exhaust emissions by as much as 60-80% over the first 4 km.
